Why Purchase UM Insurance??
Did you know that almost 1 in 4 drivers in Florida have no automobile insurance! Many
others have only bare minimum coverage. In the event of a car crash caused by a driver
without insurance (or with inadequate coverage), an “uninsured motorist insurance
policy” (UM policy) replaces the liability coverage that driver should have had and gives
you coverage for all of your costs, up to your policy’s limits. If an uninsured /
underinsured driver is responsible, a UM policy fills the gap between what the at-fault
driver’s insurance will pay (if any at all) and the total cost of the crash, up to the policy’s
limits.
You also get the same bodily injury coverage after a hit-and-run accident.
Generally, a UM policy will cover and pay for an injured person’s medical expenses, lost
wages (including diminished earnings in the future), pain & suffering and other injury-
related expenses. Health insurance will cover only medical expenses, and often with
high deductibles and/or co-pays. Additionally, while you may have health insurance to
cover your own medical costs if you are injured, a passenger riding in your car may not
have health insurance. The uninsured or underinsured coverage that you carry will
protect your passengers.
A UM auto policy typically covers the following people when harmed by an uninsured or
underinsured driver that is responsible for causing a car crash:
- You
- Household members (resident relatives)
- Permissive drivers of your insured vehicle
- Passengers of your insured vehicle
Think about it this way: When you buy auto liability insurance, you’re paying to protect
other people. It makes sense to give yourself the same protection you’re giving to others.
